The Expanding Elevator

One night in New York City my husband and mother-in-law went to an old building to listen to a woman speak who claimed to talk to aliens. It was all in fun for us, of course, but she was serious! Anyway, we entered the old building and continued to the elevator. We all saw at least 10 people waiting for the doors to open. As the elevator doors opened all the people walked inside and the three of us followed. I looked around the elevator and counted at least 7 people plus us. The elevator seemed quite large to hold so many people comfortably. I don't like the closed in feeling of small places, especially when filled with other people but it wasn’t all that bad.

The elevator began to move and then…it stopped….between floors. We were stuck.

Well, there was a woman standing to my right and a little in front of me who began immediately to freak out. Next to her was a little bald man in a white shirt and black pants. Behind me were three more people to my right, my mother-in-law directly behind me and my husband behind and to the left of me.

There was a man standing towards the back left corner of the elevator next to his wife pointing out the fact that the air shaft above his head was quite sufficient to supply enough air for all of us for a very long time and we have nothing to fear.

Now comes the really strange part. The little bald man in the white shirt leaned over and put his arm around the woman next to him and began whispering some gibberish into her ear. I could hear the voice clearly but the words were garbled. The woman immediately began to push the buttons on the elevator wall frantically as if it would somehow make it move. She kept screaming, “I’ve got to get out! I’ve got to get out!” As she did this, the little bald man in the white shirt put his hand over hers on the buttons. His hand was superimposed over hers on those buttons. I could see right through them!

All of a sudden the elevator doors opened and we were on another floor. Now, please understand, this was a very old elevator. It was one of those that you would definitely feel even the slightest movement in. It was as if it never moved at all, but we just “appeared” on the next floor.

I was the second person out after the freaked out woman and I immediately turned back towards the elevator to find my husband. As I did, I saw my mother-in-law; my husband and the man who tried to console us come out. No one else came out. They were gone.
Not only were they gone, but the elevator looked to only be able to hold 5 people at most and that was pushing it.

The elevator actually looked as if it “grew” and the people inside of it, including the little bald man with the white shirt just disappeared. I know it sounds far fetched, but it is true.

I’ll never forget it. It was quite an experience!

Wow! Now that is an amazing story. Did you ever check into the history of the building or the property to find out if there had been some sort of tragedy there? Being able to find out that kind of information could go a long way to understanding why this happened.

I finally found out the name of the building with the "Expanding Elevator". It's called "The Source Of Life Center" at 352 7th Ave. NYC. I have been searching to find out some information on the place but haven't had much luck thus far. I'll keep working on it though. If anyone finds a site that talks about the building I'd be very grateful.

Ok, a little update on this building. In researching the area that this building is located on, I have found that during the Revolutionary War, the area around 7th ave where this building now stands, was nothing more than fields which had some scattered cottages around it. In fact, the entire area from where the FDR drive is today to the tip of Fort Hamilton was were the extent of any real habitation was located. Above this, split in the center by a heavy treeline which covered the east from the west sides, were gullies, waterfalls, heavy forest and rolling hills. There was no real "City Scape" development of the area until the early 19th century at the earliest.

Also, on further discussions with "LE" we determined that the supposed poltergeists were dressed in no period garb, but rather clothes that one would see people wearing today. This was not residual though but definetely intelligent, as there was interaction throughout the entire episode.

So in conclusion to this little introspective I would assume that:

A. The haunting (if that) was by people from the 19th century time frame to today, that is if one believes areas of effect are "zoned" by familiar surroundings.
B. The type of haunting was intelligent and not residual
C. It was witnessed by at least three people at once.
D. Another eyewitness I interviewed states that when leaving the elevator and traversing the stairway to the entrance of the meeting room, she noticed "no one from the elevator actually followed them up the stairs". This is corroborated by LE and the other witness, even though there was only one hallway from the elevator up to the room. There is another door which leads to another part of the building, but the one eyewitness was the last person out of the elevator and watched as the others began to leave. "No one walked inside that door."

Interesting information. I agree with your conclusions, however it still leaves a big mystery for us, doesn't it? Who were those people? Why did they appear in the elevator? Did they actually have anything to do with the property?
Those questions may never be answered, but that's what keeps us in this field looking, right?
